about

The Soul EP tells the story of how life was like for me and my family after Super Typhoon Yutu hit our home in Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands). Each track has a description to help better explain the topics and ideas in this diverse collection of songs. Enjoy!

Which Path Do You Go?:
On the night of October 24th through the early morning of October 25th, 2018, our home and many others in the Northern Mariana Islands were hit by Super Typhoon Yutu. The typhoon left many people with damaged homes and left some completely homeless. This song describes that night which we witnessed first-hand being inside the house as the roof was being ripped off by the extreme winds. This song sets the tone of the EP and paints the portrait of how life was like for us in the aftermath. Where do we go from here? What the fuck do we do now? Which path do we go? After the first week of the aftermath I bought a notebook and started writing the five songs that make up this EP. They helped reconstruct my soul and gave me the motivation I needed to work and rebuild our lives.

Defeated:
Some days were a lot harder than others. This song is the result of just one bad day where bad shit just kept continuously happening. Writing about it definitely got it all off my chest and made me feel better. There's no turn-around or a light of hope in this song because I just wanted to focus on what I was feeling with all my thoughts truly unfiltered and uncensored at the time. But of course, I was hopeful things would look up after.

Island Wide Blackout:
After Typhoon Yutu, the entire island of Saipan (Tinian as well) lost it's power and gradually our power company, CUC, with the help of others (GPA, Military and more), restored the power back slowly, but safely. However, some people refused to keep it positive and refused to remain patient. I wrote this song about the situation we were put in and how we chose to deal with it.

Dead Rain:
This song is the result of what I was feeling those days where it would just rain then the sun would come out, then rain again and then the sun would come out again and just straight incinerate us. I was kinda losing my mind when I wrote this, but in a fun way! The first verse just came out so effortlessly and it's definitely one of my favorites! The situation was like when you're stuck in the desert and you see a mirage but instead of a cool, shady place, I was seeing the finished product of this song.

Heal The Soul:
This song closes out the EP by encompassing the idea behind the entire project. That idea is the answer to the question asked in the first song. Which path do I go? The path of reconstructing my soul. Though we faced tragedy, I found my way to self-healing and I hope the Soul EP helps anyone facing similar situations for years to come. Thank you for listening to my story.
